Glutathione: The Master Antioxidant and Its Role in Detoxification
Why Glutathione Is 'The Master'
Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide — composed of cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid — synthesized endogenously in every human cell. Its concentration in the liver and immune cells is among the highest in the body, reflecting its central role in cellular protection. GSH functions as:
- The primary substrate for Phase II liver detoxification (glutathione-S-transferase reactions)
- A direct scavenger of hydroxyl radicals, superoxide, and reactive nitrogen species
- The regenerator of oxidized vitamins C and E — making it central to the entire antioxidant network
- A regulator of T-lymphocyte proliferation and natural killer cell activity
Depletion: When and Why It Matters
GSH levels decline with age, chronic inflammation, toxic load (heavy metals, environmental chemicals, alcohol), and intense exercise without recovery support. Low glutathione is associated with virtually every major chronic disease — cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative conditions, autoimmune disorders, and cancer — though the causal direction of these associations remains under active investigation.
The critical insight from Richie et al. (2015, European Journal of Nutrition) is that conventional oral glutathione is ineffective: it is almost entirely broken down in the gut before reaching systemic circulation. Only liposomal or sublingual formulations have demonstrated clinically meaningful increases in whole-blood GSH.
The Richie Trial: Liposomal GSH in Humans
In the most important human clinical trial to date, 54 healthy adults received either 500mg or 1000mg/day of liposomal glutathione vs. placebo for four weeks. Results showed:
- 30–35% increase in whole-blood glutathione at 500mg/day
- Significant reduction in oxidative stress markers (GSSG/GSH ratio)
- Increased natural killer cell cytotoxicity (immune function)
- Enhanced lymphocyte proliferative response
No adverse effects were observed. This study established the foundation for liposomal GSH as the standard of clinical supplementation.
AXEL Protocol Application
In TerraMatrix™ terrain assessments, glutathione status is evaluated via the GSSG/GSH ratio (oxidative stress marker) and lymphocyte GSH concentration. Deficiency is particularly prevalent in patients with high toxic load, intense athletic training, or post-viral immune dysregulation. Lipo® Glutathione is a core component of Defense (DTS) and Recovery (RTS) terrain protocols.
